The Future Layers of Dalhousie
05/10/2021 - Final report and final presentation
Hello Dalhousie residents!
We are happy to present the report and presentation that chronicles our shared journey together. As outlined in the report, we used your feedback as well as feedback gathered from residents during 2017 engagement sessions to determine the goals for this project. From there, we compiled feedback into major categories of interest, and along with members of the community, devised three design solutions that might be realized in the future. Also, we developed a list of short and long-term initiatives that residents could use to help realize those (or similar)Continue reading

Please feel free to watch the final presentation and read the report at your leisure.

Also, please feel free to reach out with any questions that you might have about our interpretation for the future of Dalhousie, or to simply chat about community building in general. It was a pleasure to work with you all over the last four months.
Travis and Melody
Dalhousie residents, thank you for teaching us about your experiences, concerns and hopes for the future of your neighborhood over the past 4 months. Today marks the final opportunity to participate in the activities as we will be closing them to look at your feedback. We learned a great deal and are looking forward to publishing your comments and our findings in the coming weeks.
We will be posting a link to our final presentation in this space shortly after April 15. In late April, we plan to post a link to our project report as well as the activity data that was collected over the past four months.
We hope that residents of Dalhousie will look at what we've observed and what their neighbors have said, and begin conversations about the kind of community that they would like to see Dalhousie grow into in the coming years.
Stay tuned and thank you for all of your contributions.
Travis and Melody (The Future Layers of Dalhousie team)
Each of you have contributed a lot of ideas in the previous activities, and we're just asking for one more!
In the final activity, please share your ideas for new indoor and/or outdoor community amenities at each of the three sites. Please tell us what you'd like to see, who it's for and which of the three identified locations you would like to see it in.
Beyond that, please feel free to tell a story, add a picture or anything else that you feel would help to make your point.
Thanks again for all of your contributions to this project. We will be hosting a link to the final report at this space in late April for you to download and review.
Activities on this website have been focused on different subjects so far, and as we approach the one month mark until we deliver our report to the community, we wanted to open up the floor to discuss any general comments, concerns or opportunities that you see in Dalhousie's future.
A major part of this project is to deliver the report of 'what we heard' to the community. This is supposed to represent the many topics that are important to residents, so please feel free to contribute the board so that you that your voice is added to the final data. The more talking and posting that you do, the better!
Step 1: Thank you for taking part in this activity. We have decided to bring over the activity completed in the workshop last Friday for this week's mapping exercise. Similar to what you would expect on our website, we want to take you through a short exercise on this Miro board. Please scroll down to the second body of text at the bottom right of this document.
Step 2: Our goal is to move the development type that you see on the left of the map to the area in Dalhousie where you feel that it would make the most sense. There are a mix of different housing types there - please place the housing type on the map, and add a comment next to it that describes your decision.
Here is a link to the Miroboard. If you have any questions about how to use the board, please contact either of us using the emails in the bar to the right.
Welcome to Activity 4. We have something new and fun for you! In this activity, we are looking forward to your ideas on the state of future development in Dalhousie. It might take about 5-10 minutes to share your ideas on the idea board, click here to see more information about the activity.
In this activity, we are going to ask you to be creative and imagine ways that Dalhousie could support more residents in the future. Please read the scenario, and describe the types of homes, businesses and special facilities (ie: seniors care) that you feel would fit in with the current character of the neighborhood.
Welcome to Activity 3 Part 2. Similar to last week's activity, we are seeking your input on the state of traffic, transit and the streetscape in Dalhousie. The survey below should take abouit 1-2 minutes to complete. If you have ideas that that aren't reflected here, please contribute them to the map activity.
In activity 3 we are seeking your input on traffic and transit opportunities and concerns in and around Dalhousie. Drop a pin where you think that the streetscape, traffic or transit conditions could be changed to improve your experience as a commuter or traveler to places within or outside of the community.
Please click the title to the right to be taken to the map. Also, ensure that you return next Monday for part two of this activity.
Welcome to Activity 2 Part 2, now the questionnaire about Pedestrian and cycling pathways in Dalhousie has been released. We would like you to share with us and the rest of the community about your feelings on this topic.
The questionnaire including the following 5 subjects:
- Pedestrian and cycling paths in nearby communities.
- Back lanes.
- Pedestrian and bicycle safety.
- Pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.
- Community entrances.
We appreciate your participation!
To access the activity, click on the 'Pedestrian and Cycling Realm' logo to the right. This will bring you to the questionnaire. If you have any questions or need help getting the activity to work, please feel free to email us.
For the pedestrian and cycling realm activity, we're starting with a map exercise. Share your opinion about where you think a pedestrian or cycling space could be changed to be better or safer. This could be a back lane, park pathway or cycling path on a roadway. If you have ideas for green space that are not related to pathways, please visit the map and survey activities, but if you have a great idea that we didn't mention, please add it!
- Add your idea (Is your pedestrian/cycling idea not here? Add it - this could be anything!)
- Improved connections between/to parks (Within Dalhousie or to other communities)
- Better pathway connections (ie: could paths inside or outside of the community connect more effectively?)
- Pedestrian and bicycle safety issue (IE: unmarked intersection, bad line of sight)
- Better lighting
- Better maintenance (IE: snow, ice, mowing, weeding)
To access the activity, click on the 'Pedestrian and Cycling Realm' logo to the right. This will bring you to the map page where you will click on the plus sign on the top left-hand side of the map to begin dropping pins. If you have any questions or need help getting the activity to work, please feel free to email us.

Hello Dalhousie residents,
First, we would like to thank you for the opportunity to work together with the residents of Dalhousie on solutions that benefit the future of the community.
As students from the University of Calgary, it is our goal to work with your community to explore planning solutions that are relevant to your lives. We are eager to work with everyone to develop possible solutions for these issues in a report that will be presented at the end of the process.
In addition, we are also looking forward to learning more about Dalhousie’s history and get a sense for your collective aspirations for the community’s future. Finally, we hope to develop an understanding of how the COVID-19 situation has affected members of the community, and how these changes could impact future planning decisions in the community.
