Next Calgary and the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape are hosting a collaborative symposium on the use of tactical urbanism in Calgary and around the world. Join us in discussing strategies to mobilize tactical urbanism in your city and learn how others are bringing tactical urbanism to life.

The symposium will include a morning of panel discussions from international speakers providing participants with an introduction to tactical urbanism projects from around the world. Afternoon sessions will include workshops on various topics relating to tactical urbanism and how they are being and can be used right here in Calgary. Come to learn more, share your ideas, and make new connections to create change in your city.

This event also features a two-week asynchronous collaboration on a digital platform, Nov 18 – Dec 02. The synchronous event is taking place on Nov 25.

What is Tactical Urbanism?

According to Tactical Urbanist Guide, the idea of tactical urbanism is the use of short-term, low-cost and scalable interventions to create or catalyze long-term change in urban spaces.

The following is an open-source collection of tactical urbanism projects. Add your project or one you know of. Make sure to include a title, location, year, and credits. The projects presented at the Tactical Urbanism: Spectrum event are tagged with “presenter.”

    Tel Aviv Mobile Bicycle Parklets (Israel)

    Based on the Rotterdam and De-Hauge fietsvlonders. The purpose of this project was to locate places where we'd turn car parking into bicycle parking, test feasibility and demand using low cost infrastructure which can be deployed for a certain time, observed measured – and then by mobilized to a new test-site location.

    Volunteers made wooden cut outs and distributed them to Dover residents to decorate. These were then collected by volunteers, coated in protective sealant and installed on the fence of the Twin Views Communal Garden in December 2020.

    Move Your Neighbourhood (Germany)

    Public space is the central arena for the mobility revolution. This is where visions for the future must be negotiated - in dialog and experimentation together with local people.

    In the project "Move Your Neighborhood", we want to rethink mobility, open up spaces of possibility and establish new practices. We are testing and evaluating innovative methods in two mixed-use neighborhoods in Germany. In a co-creative process, residents work together with experts from science, business and civil society as well as representatives from politics and administration to design a transformation corridor for the local mobility revolution.
